This Immunity Boosting Orange Smoothie packs a hefty dose of Vitamin C! It has a refreshing orange flavor with a hint of vanilla!

For my first recipe of the new year, I wanted to bring you something healthy to start your January off right! Smoothies are a great way to add fresh produce to your diet because they’re quick and easy to make. Plus, there are endless ways to combine ingredients to make deliciously healthy smoothies. For the past week, I’ve been drinking a smoothie every day and continue to come up with new flavor combinations.

If you love this recipe, you’ll also enjoy my Mango Smoothie and Green Monster Smoothie!

There are a few smoothie recipes that I find myself going back to again and again, because they’re just so good. One of those is this Cocoa Almond Protein Smoothie, another is a green smoothie that I’ll be sharing here soon, and another is this Immunity Boosting Orange Smoothie!

This refreshing orange smoothie is great for this time of year, when colds and other viruses are going around. Both fresh oranges and mango contain a good dose of Vitamin C, which can help protect our immunity. When it comes to staying healthy, we’ll need to do a bit more than drink delicious smoothies. 😉 A combination of nutritious foods, exercise, stress reduction, and good old hand-washing are the best ways to prevent illness. I could write a whole series of posts about reducing stress, but for now I’ll just say that consistent exercise is a great help.

I always have the nutrition goal of eating more fruits and vegetables, which happens naturally when cutting out refined-sugar treats. Instead of reaching for a cookie or graham cracker, I snack on apples, carrot sticks and pick one of my best smoothie recipes! For baking, I’ll use maple syrup or honey (which are unrefined sugars), plus mashed bananas or applesauce, to make healthier snacks like these Carrot Cake Breakfast Cookies and these Blueberry Banana Muffins.

Are you making health goals this January? It may be cliche, but I love that this time of year offers a fresh start and the motivation to make positive changes. Here’s to a healthy and happy year.

A Healthier Version of the Popular Orange Julius

As a kid, we didn’t go to malls or out to eat often. When we did, my mom was pretty lax about the choices we made. She turned a blind eye when I would fill my plate with an egg-bacon-cheese “salad” and chocolate mousse at buffet restaurants, and order deep fried chimichangas at Mexican restaurants.

A stop at Orange Julius when we were in malls was mandatory! Creamy, delicious, and — made of oranges? A pretty good “treat”, right?

Here’s the ingredient list of a classic Orange Julius:

I’m not quite sure what sodium carboxymethylcellulose or Maltodextrin is, but I am pretty sure I will NOT be feeding it to my son. I do see dextrose, sugar, and corn syrup solids — 3 different forms of sugar. (Lots of these ingredients are on my Food Additive Nix List (free printable available)- a great resource for navigating nutrition labels!).

I was surprised to see actual concentrated orange juice on the list, especially considering the nutritional stats.

Nutritional Stats of a classic Orange Julius vs. a Homemade Orange Smoothie:

The mall drink is packed with more sugar than a can of soda, and besides having vitamin C from the orange juice it contains, it’s devoid of nutrients. It’s a sugar bomb with no protein and no fiber.

My Healthy Orange Julius Smoothie is made with real fruit, and contains no added sugars — the 20 grams it contains come straight from the oranges and banana. Because it’s made with whole ingredients, it also has a nice dose of fiber, Vitamin A, calcium and iron.

Are Oranges Good in Smoothies?

I didn’t start using whole oranges in smoothies until I got a Vitamix. That thing will blend just about anything into a smooth texture. Since I use the oranges fresh and not frozen in this smoothie, it will also work in a regular blender.

Fresh oranges add a ton of sweetness and a tart flavor that I love to smoothies – so although this fruit is often overlooked at smoothie bars, it shouldn’t be!

How to Make Orange Julius at Home?

An Orange Julius is just a frothy vanilla-orange smoothie. When I was a kid, my mom would make them for us at home by using concentrated orange juice, and blending it with ice and vanilla. That’s where I got the idea for this easy Orange Julius recipe.

The one from the mall is light and creamy, so I like to add either almond milk or coconut milk. I also find that using whey protein isolate, in addition to giving it a protein kick to make it more satiating, gives it that frothy and light texture.

How to Make a Healthy Orange Julius Smoothie

Step 1: Add peeled oranges, frozen bananas, almond milk, ice, and vanilla to a blender. Add whey protein if using (I highly recommend this!).

Step 2: Process the smoothie until it’s light and frothy.

Step 3: Serve the smoothie right away so that it stays icy cold!

Step 4: If desired, garnish the smoothie is orange zest and whipped cream, if desired. You can keep this orange smoothie vegan by using a vegan protein powder and coconut whipped cream.

The Perfect Orange Smoothie Recipe

Make it Vegan: Sub your favorite vegan protein, or omit the protein power.

Make it Your Own: Turn this healthy Orange Julius Smoothie into a healthy Strawberry Orange Julius by adding a couple of strawberries. Add spinach for an extra nutrient boost. I also like making this with grapefruits for an extra tart but still creamy and delicious treat.

  • ▢ 2 oranges peeled
  • ▢ 1 banana large, peeled, quartered & frozen
  • ▢ 1/4-1/2 cup almond milk or sub coconut milk
  • ▢ 15 large ice cubes
  • ▢ 20 grams whey protein isolate optional*
  • ▢ 2 teaspoons vanilla

US Customary – Metric

  • For a thick smoothie, be sure your banana is completely frozen prior to making a smoothie. I also only use 1/4 cup of liquid to keep things on the thicker side.

  • Add peeled oranges, frozen banana, ice cubes, your choice of milk (can sub orange juice for a sweeter smoothie), optional protein powder, and vanilla to a blender. This works best in a high speed blender, but can be made in a good quality standard blender.

  • Blend until the oranges are completely smoothie and the smoothie is thick and creamy. Top with a dollop of yogurt or coconut cream, if desired.

*Use almond milk for the lowest calorie/sugar smoothie. Use orange juice if you’d prefer a sweeter smoothie. I often use coconut milk to add a bit of extra creaminess and richness to the smoothie.

*Whey protein is optional, but I recommend it for the best texture. The whey protein isolate I’ve linked to in the recipe is unsweetened, but has a natural vanilla flavor added that also adds an extra boost of vanilla flavor.

Orange Smoothie - 11 Quick Blender Recipes

Orange smoothie has many health benefits. Its use has a beneficial effect on performance. A bright orange color uplifts the mood. To prepare a vitamin smoothie, it will take a couple of minutes of time, the presence of a few oranges and additional ingredients to taste. The listed components will need to be prepared, loaded into the blender bowl and turned on the puree mode. In a few minutes, the drink will be ready. It is recommended to use smoothies freshly prepared - during storage, useful substances begin to decay.

Orange smoothie rules

Orange fruit can serve as the basis for various vitamin drinks. The main advantage of the fruit is the high content of ascorbic acid and natural antioxidants. Eating the fruit helps stimulate the immune system and improves appetite. An additional advantage is the normalization of water exchange.

Usually orange cocktails are used as a sports or diet food. It is recommended to choose the right ingredients so that the beneficial substances are absorbed by the body as quickly and easily as possible. It is necessary to thoroughly wash and grind the components with an electric blender. It is important to choose ripe citruses without visible damage.

Additional ingredients can be added to orange smoothies to help boost the nutritional content. For example - ginger root, pineapple or mango pulp. It is undesirable to add sweeteners, as they make the drink too high in calories. It is better to use natural bee honey. In hot weather, add ice cubes.

Please note - excessive consumption of oranges provokes allergies. It is recommended to drink a drink after breakfast. If you drink a cocktail on an empty stomach, you may irritate the stomach due to the high acid content. Choose the right recipe from the list above, or experiment with mixing ingredients to get the perfect taste.

Orange Banana Smoothie

Today we're going to take a look at some of the best ways to make an orange banana smoothie.

Classic

  • Two oranges;
  • Banana.

This drink takes approximately ten minutes to prepare. First of all - free the fruit from the peel. Break the banana pulp with your hands or cut into rings with a knife. Load the ingredients into the blender bowl and turn on the appliance. In addition, you can put in some grated ginger root, which will make the resulting cocktail a little spicy.

Please note that if the smoothie is too thick, it is recommended to add a small amount of mineral water. Or add some fresh orange juice. The consistency of the mixture can vary from freshness and variety of fruit.

Yogurt

  • Two medium oranges;
  • Large banana;
  • A glass of natural yoghurt without additives;
  • Honey spoon.

Clean fruit. In orange fruits, it is recommended to remove, in addition to the peel, internal films that can adversely affect the taste of the finished product. Cut the slices into pieces. Load fruit into the grinder. Add honey and yogurt. Turn on the puree mode for a couple of minutes to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The finished drink will be quite thick. Due to the high content of nutrients, smoothies are a substitute for breakfast or a light dinner.

Grapefruit

  • 2 juicy oranges;
  • Small banana;
  • Half a grapefruit.

Drink preparation is easy. Peel the oranges. Cut the slices into pieces. Break the banana pulp with your hands or chop with a knife. Put all the listed ingredients into the blender bowl and turn on the puree mode. You need to wait a few minutes until the mixture gets a homogeneous structure. The exact waiting time varies depending on the firmness of the fruit and the power of your electrical appliance.

Pour the finished smoothie into glasses. You can use powdered sugar as decoration. It is advisable to drink the drink immediately after preparation, because after a while the beneficial substances begin to break down.

Kiwi

  • 1 orange;
  • Two kiwis;
  • Three glasses of natural yoghurt;
  • 2 spoons of honey.

To make an orange and kiwi drink, prepare the fruit first. It is recommended to wash the fruits under running water and remove the peel. Place the ingredients in a blender. Fill them with yogurt. Also add two tablespoons of honey. Puree for a few minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Pour the resulting cocktail into glasses.

Orange Juice Smoothie Recipes

If it is not possible to use the whole fruit to make a vitamin drink, it is recommended to look at options using citrus juice. Let's list popular recipes.

With yogurt

  • A glass of orange juice;
  • A glass of yoghurt;
  • Tablespoon of cream ice cream;
  • Sugar or honey - to taste.

Mix orange juice with ice cream and natural yoghurt. Beat with a blender until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Please note that the finished drink may not seem sweet enough. To sweeten the cocktail, you can pour a spoonful of granulated sugar or add honey.

Pineapple

  • One medium banana;
  • 150 g pineapple;
  • 2.5 cups orange juice;
  • Bee honey.

Peel the banana. Cut the pulp of the fruit into small rings or break it into several pieces with your hands. Put into blender bowl. Then add the previously diced pineapple pulp and turn on the appliance. Bring the mixture to a puree. Then pour in the orange juice and sweeten. Puree the drink again.

To get the maximum amount of microelements and vitamins, it is recommended to prepare a drink exclusively from fresh fruits. However, if the right ingredients are not available, canned pineapple rings and packaged citrus juice can be used.

This recipe uses natural honey as a sweetener. However, the bee product can be replaced with other ingredients with similar flavor profiles, such as maple syrup or agave nectar. Such experiments will allow you to achieve unusual taste properties.

Vanilla

  • One medium orange;
  • Half a glass of orange juice;
  • 1.5 cups of yogurt;
  • A small pinch of vanilla.

Peel a ripe orange. Finely cut the slices with a knife. Mix the ingredients in a blender container and beat. Wait a few minutes for a homogeneous mixture. If desired, you can cool the resulting drink with a few ice cubes.

Apple

  • One orange;
  • 2 large apples;
  • Glass of orange juice;
  • Sweetener - granulated sugar or honey;
  • Citrus peel.

First, peel the orange. It is advisable to remove the internal partitions, which will make the taste of the drink unnecessarily tart. Remove the core from the apples along with the seed box. Grate the pulp on a coarse grater. Then beat the resulting ingredients with an electric blender. Select a high blade speed for best results.

The next step is to add citrus juice and honey. Turn on the blender for a few seconds. Pour the resulting drink into glasses. If desired, you can decorate the smoothie with fruit slices or decorative umbrellas.

Carrot

  • Medium apple;
  • Banana;
  • One small carrot;
  • Glass of orange juice;
  • Lemon juice or lime juice.

To make an orange-carrot smoothie, wash the root vegetable and remove the skin. Then peel the apple. Take out the seeds and the partitions between them.

Peel the banana. Cut the flesh with a knife or break it into several pieces with your hands. Squeeze juice from citrus fruits.
First of all, grind the carrots with a blender. Add apples and chopped banana to the carrot puree. Turn on the puree mode. Wait a couple of minutes for the mixture to become homogeneous. Pour in a spoonful of lemon juice and turn the blender back on for ten seconds.

It is recommended to use sweet fruits - then you do not have to add granulated sugar or other sweetener.

Spicy orange smoothie

  • Orange;
  • One lemon wedge;
  • Glass of water;
  • 1 cm ginger root;
  • 5 mint leaves.

Clean the orange. Be sure to remove the internal partitions so that the smoothie does not turn out bitter. Rinse the mint leaves and pat dry on a paper towel. Load the listed ingredients into a blender. Grind for a few minutes. To select the optimal density of the drink, experiment with the amount of water added. For a sweeter smoothie, add a spoonful of honey.

The resulting drink promotes weight loss and at the same time contains many useful substances. Ginger root due to its sharpness will help to cheer up in the morning. However, drinking a cocktail on an empty stomach is contraindicated due to the high content of acids.

Coconut and orange smoothie

  • Two oranges;
  • One banana;
  • Ripe mango;
  • Two glasses of natural yoghurt;
  • Coconut flakes.

Preparation:

  1. Cut fruit pulp into cubes;
  2. Squeeze orange juice;
  3. Blend the ingredients with a blender;
  4. Add juice to puree;
  5. Pour in drinking yoghurt;
  6. Beat again;
  7. Pour smoothie into glasses.
